Safe Installation 101: What to Expect When We Deliver and Install Your Safe

Buying a safe is one thing — getting it properly delivered and installed is what makes it secure and usable. This guide walks through the entire process so you know what to expect from our delivery and installation, how to prepare, and the common decisions we’ll help you make on-site.

Before Delivery — Planning & Prep

  • Choose the safe and confirm dimensions and weight. We’ll verify model specs and recommended placement. Consider outside accessibility for direct installation.

  • Measure access routes: doorways, halls, staircases, and any tight turns. Take photos or videos.

  • Check flooring and structure: wood subfloors, concrete slabs, basements, or elevated floors may require different anchoring or reinforcement.

  • Confirm power needs and proximity to outlets if you want internal lights, dehumidifiers, or alarm wiring.

  • Obtain permissions if in an HOA, apartment building, or rental property. For vault doors, coordinate contractors and any required permits in advance.

  • Schedule a delivery window and let us know about pets, gate codes, or special access rules.

Day of Delivery — Arrival & Safety

  • I will arrive with tools, moving equipment, floor protection, and anchoring hardware.

  • We’ll do a site walkthrough with you to confirm placement, access route, and any last-minute adjustments.

  • Safety is priority: we’ll secure the work area, use protective floor coverings, and follow safe lifting protocols. You should keep children and pets away during installation.

Placement & Positioning

  • Final placement considers security, accessibility, and environmental factors (humidity, potential for flooding, temperature).

  • We’ll align the safe for proper door swing, operator access, and concealment if requested.

  • If necessary, we’ll discuss relocation alternatives (different floor/room, recessed install, or converting a closet).

Anchoring & Mounting

  • Anchoring prevents theft by removal. Options depend on safe type and floor material:

    • Concrete slab: expansion anchors or screw bolts into the slab.

    • Wood subfloor over crawlspace: through-bolt into joists or install reinforced plywood and bolting plates.

    • Basement with concrete block: anchor into the slab; block walls typically require anchoring into slab or added structural support as needed.

    • Elevated floors: may require a steel plate or reinforcement; we can provide structural work if needed as long as it permissible and permitted.

Vault Doors & Room Vaults (if applicable)

  • Vault doors require site prep: accurate opening dimensions, reinforced framing, and often masonry or structural steel work.

  • We coordinate with your contractor, review rough-in requirements, and provide templates for finishing.

  • Installation may take longer and can require permits — we’ll walk you through the timeline and contractor coordination.

  • If you are planning a new build, choose and order your vault door ahead of time.

  • If there is no outside access to the area that the vault door will be installed, it is best to have the vault door placed in the basement prior to the framing construction. It is best to connect your installer and contractor so they can work out needed timelines ahead of install.

Lock Setup & Testing

  • We will show you how to program electronic keypads or show you how to operate a dial combination lock.

  • If the safe is a floor model or you purchased from an individual, make sure you have the combination written down from the store.

Common Questions & Tips

  • Q: Do I need to be home during installation? A: Yes — we’ll need access and your sign-off for placement and education.

  • Q: What if my safe won’t fit through the door? A: We will discuss this potential before you choose the safe, if you have already purchased or have the safe, we can discuss your options based on your home’s details.

  • Q: Can you move an existing safe? A: Yes — moving heavy safes requires planning, manpower. We’ll evaluate and quote.

  • Q: How should I protect the floor? A: We will use protective coverings.

  • Tip: Keep a sealed key or code backup off-site in a secure location (deposit box or trusted person).

Maintenance After Installation

  • Periodically look for signs of moisture.

  • Change lock batteries annually (or per manufacturer recommendation).

  • Use desiccants, electric dry-rod or a small dehumidifier for firearms and media protection.
